Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Cinnamon Sugar Coating

  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly spray a 6-cavity donut pan with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg until evenly combined.
  3. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate small bowl, whisk the buttermilk, egg, melted unsalted butter, and vanilla extract until fully combined.
  4. Combine Ingredients: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently stir until just combined. Avoid overmixing to keep the donuts light and tender.
  5. Fill Donut Pan: Spoon or pipe the batter into the prepared donut pan, filling each cavity about three-quarters full for even rising.
  6. Bake Donuts: Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, indicating the donuts are fully cooked.
  7. Prepare Coating: While the donuts bake, mix together the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon in a shallow bowl. Pour melted butter into another shallow bowl for dipping.
  8. Coat Donuts: Once the donuts are warm, dip each into the melted butter, then immediately coat in the cinnamon sugar mixture. Repeat for all donuts.
  9. Serve: Serve the donuts warm for the best flavor and texture, enjoying a homemade cinnamon sugar treat.

Notes

  • Use a donut pan for the classic shape, but if unavailable, muffin tins can be used, though the shape will differ.
  • For a dairy-free option, substitute buttermilk with almond milk mixed with a teaspoon of lemon juice.
  • Ensure not to overmix the batter to avoid tough donuts.
  • Donuts are best enjoyed the same day but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
  • Reheat gently in the oven or microwave before serving.
