This authentic Bravas Sauce, or Salsa Brava, is a traditional Spanish condiment known for its smoky, spicy flavor. Made with smoked paprika, olive oil, and a smooth, velvety texture, it perfectly complements crispy fried potatoes. Ready in just 15 minutes, this easy-to-make sauce is a vibrant addition to tapas nights or any meal needing a flavorful kick.

Ingredients

Bravas Sauce Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons hot smoked paprika (pimentón picante)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons sweet smoked paprika (pimentón dulce)
  • 1-2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth
  • Salt, to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat the Olive Oil and Paprika: Heat the olive oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add both the hot and sweet smoked paprika and stir well until the spices are fully combined with the oil, releasing their smoky aroma.
  2. Add and Toast the Flour: Stir in 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour and keep stirring continuously for about a minute. This toasts the flour slightly and helps build the base of the sauce.
  3. Gradually Incorporate the Broth: Lower the heat to medium-low. Slowly add the chicken or vegetable broth, a little at a time, stirring constantly. The flour will absorb the liquid and start thickening the sauce.
  4. Adjust Consistency: As the sauce begins to thicken, add more flour (up to 2 tablespoons total) if necessary to reach a smooth, velvety consistency. The sauce should be thick but not so much that it holds its shape firmly on its own.
  5. Simmer and Season: Reduce the heat to low and gently simmer the sauce for 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Season with salt to taste.
  6. Serve: Drizzle the finished Bravas Sauce over crispy fried potatoes or your favorite tapas, and enjoy the vibrant smoky and spicy flavors.
