Caribbean Boiled Dumplings are soft, chewy dough balls made from a simple mixture of flour, cornmeal, salt, and water. Boiled until they float to the surface, these dumplings are the perfect accompaniment to savory stews, soups, and traditional Caribbean dishes, adding a hearty, comforting texture to every bite.

Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 2 cups (240g) flour
  • ½ cup (80g) cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon (5.5g) salt
  • ¾ cup (175ml) water

Cooking Items

  • Water, enough to boil the dumplings
  • ¼ cup (60ml) oil

Instructions

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients: Pour the flour, cornmeal, and salt into a bowl and mix thoroughly to evenly distribute the ingredients.
  2. Add Water and Form Dough: Slowly add ¾ cup of water a little at a time, incorporating it by pulling the flour mixture from the edges of the bowl into the center until a dough forms.
  3. Knead Dough: Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-6 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Rest Dough: Cover the dough with a cloth and let it rest for 10-15 minutes to soften and make it easier to handle.
  5. Shape Dumplings: Pull the dough apart into pieces of your desired dumpling size, roll each piece into a ball, and flatten the center slightly using your thumb.
  6. Boil Water and Add Oil: Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil and add ¼ cup of oil to prevent the dumplings from sticking.
  7. Cook Dumplings: Carefully place the shaped dumplings into the boiling water in batches if necessary, and boil for 20-25 minutes until they start to float to the surface, indicating they are cooked through.
  8. Remove and Serve: Use a slotted spoon to lift the dumplings out of the water, drain, and place on a plate. Serve hot alongside your favorite stew or vegetable dishes.

Notes

  • You can cook dumplings directly in soup by adding them 15 minutes before the soup finishes cooking to allow thorough cooking.
  • Making dumplings in uniform sizes helps ensure even cooking.
  • Stir dumplings gently while boiling to prevent them from sticking to the pot’s bottom.
  • Adjust water quantity according to flour type; add more water if dough feels too dry or add flour if it’s too sticky.
  • Nutritional information is an approximate estimate and can vary with ingredient brands and quantities used.
