Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 2 1/2 teaspoons active dry or rapid rise yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 1/2 cups bread flour

Topping

  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese (powdered)

To Serve

  • Marinara sauce

Instructions

  1. Proof the Yeast: In a stand mixer bowl, combine the yeast, warm water, and sugar. Mix gently and cover with a dish towel. Let it stand for 5 minutes until the yeast is foamy and activated.
  2. Add Salt and Oil: Once the yeast has proofed, add the salt and vegetable oil to the mixture. Mix again to combine thoroughly.
  3. Add the Flour: Gradually add the bread flour one cup at a time to the wet ingredients, mixing well between each addition to develop the dough.
  4. Knead the Dough: After all the flour is incorporated, continue kneading the dough with the mixer for an additional 5 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
  5. Shape the Breadsticks: Lightly flour a clean work surface and roll out the dough to approximately 1/4 inch thickness. Using a pizza cutter, slice the dough into strips about 1/2 inch wide.
  6. Arrange and Proof: Place the cut breadsticks on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat, keeping about 1/4 inch space between each. Cover with a clean dish towel and let them rest for 20 minutes to rise.
  7. Preheat the Oven: While the breadsticks are resting, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Bake the Breadsticks: Bake the breadsticks in the preheated oven for 10 minutes until lightly golden and cooked through. Remove from the oven.
  9. Add Butter and Cheese: Immediately brush the hot breadsticks with melted butter and generously sprinkle the powdered parmesan cheese on top to coat them well.
  10. Serve: Serve the warm crazy bread with a side of marinara sauce for dipping. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Use warm water (about 110°F) to activate the yeast properly without killing it.
  • Allow the breadsticks sufficient space on the cookie sheet to rise and expand.
  • You can substitute bread flour with all-purpose flour but the texture may slightly differ.
  • For extra flavor, add garlic powder or Italian seasoning to the melted butter before brushing.
  • Store leftover breadsticks in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for longer storage.
