These homemade buttercream candies are a delightful treat featuring a creamy, sweet buttercream center coated in smooth, rich chocolate. Perfect for sharing or gifting, these candies are simple to make with basic ingredients and offer a luxurious melt-in-your-mouth experience.

Ingredients

Buttercream Filling

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2-3 tablespoons whipping cream or half & half
  • 4 cups powdered sugar

Chocolate Coating

  • 12 oz chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons shortening

Instructions

  1. Melt Butter: In a saucepan over low to medium heat, gently melt the butter. Remove from heat and let it cool for about 5 minutes before stirring in the vanilla extract to combine well.
  2. Make Buttercream Dough: In a mixing bowl, add the powdered sugar. Pour in the melted butter and vanilla mixture. Mix thoroughly until fully combined. Add 1 tablespoon of whipping cream and mix again. If the dough feels too dry, add additional whipping cream in 1 teaspoon increments, not exceeding 2 tablespoons total, until it reaches a soft but not liquidy consistency.
  3. Chill: Place the buttercream dough in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to firm up. During this time, prepare a flat-rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
  4. Roll Balls: Once chilled, scoop portions of the dough and roll them into approximately 1-inch diameter balls. Arrange the balls evenly on the prepared baking sheet.
  5. Freeze: Transfer the baking sheet with the rolled balls to the freezer for 1 hour to harden thoroughly.
  6. Melt Coating: Using a microwave-safe bowl or a saucepan over medium heat, melt the chocolate chips together with the shortening until the mixture is completely smooth and well combined.
  7. Dip Candies: Remove the hardened buttercream balls from the freezer and dip each fully into the melted chocolate until completely coated. Return them to the baking sheet to set.
  8. Add Toppings (Optional): If desired, sprinkle toppings such as sprinkles on the candies before the chocolate sets. To speed up setting, place the candies in the refrigerator, or allow them to set at room temperature.
  9. Storage: Store any leftover candies in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freezer to maintain freshness and texture.

Notes

  • You can adjust the amount of whipping cream to achieve the desired dough consistency but do not exceed 2 tablespoons total.
  • Use high-quality chocolate chips for a richer coating flavor.
  • Shortening helps to smooth and thin the chocolate coating for an even dip.
  • Frozen buttercream balls ensure the chocolate coating sets quickly and evenly.
  • Store candies in a cool, dry place; refrigeration keeps them firm longer.
  • Optional toppings can be nuts, coconut flakes, or colorful sprinkles for decoration.
