This Crispy Air Fryer Tofu recipe delivers perfectly crunchy tofu cubes in just 10 minutes using an air fryer. Coated with flavorful seasonings and cornstarch, this easy and quick dish is ideal for a protein-packed snack or meal prep option. Pressing the tofu before cooking ensures the crispiest texture, and the use of an air fryer makes it a healthier alternative to traditional frying.

Ingredients

Tofu

  • 1 lb block extra firm tofu, pressed for 30 minutes then cut into 1" cubes or torn into pieces (16 oz.)

Seasonings and Coating

  • ½ tablespoon light soy sauce or liquid aminos
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch, up to 2 extra teaspoons for extra crisp
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil or any oil
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Press and Cube Tofu: Press the extra firm tofu for 30 minutes to remove excess moisture. After pressing, cut the tofu into 1-inch cubes or tear into pieces if you prefer even more crispiness.
  2. Season the Tofu: Place the cubed tofu into a medium-sized bowl. Add ½ tablespoon of light soy sauce or liquid aminos and toss to coat evenly. Add garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, sea salt, cornstarch, sesame oil, and ground black pepper. Toss thoroughly until all pieces are evenly coated with the seasoning mixture.
  3. Arrange in Air Fryer: Place the tofu pieces in a single layer inside the air fryer basket. Make sure they are spaced out with a little bit of room around each piece for even cooking and maximum crispiness.
  4. Air Fry the Tofu: Set your air fryer to 400°F (204°C). Cook the tofu for a total of 10 to 15 minutes. At the 5-minute mark, shake the basket gently to toss the tofu pieces and ensure even cooking. Continue air frying until the tofu is golden and crispy.
  5. Cool and Serve: Remove the tofu from the air fryer once cooked through and crispy. Allow it to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy as a snack, salad topper, or part of your favorite meal.

Notes

  • Pressing tofu is essential to get a crispy texture; use a tofu press or wrap in a clean towel and place something heavy on top for 30 minutes.
  • Adjust the amount of cornstarch for a crispier texture, but avoid over-coating to prevent a gummy surface.
  • Feel free to swap sesame oil with another oil of your choice for different flavor profiles.
  • Serve with dipping sauces like soy sauce, sweet chili sauce, or peanut sauce for extra flavor.
  • Store leftover crispy tofu in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat in the air fryer for best results.
