This homemade buttermilk ranch dressing is a cool, creamy, and garlicky condiment that pairs perfectly with green salads, crudités, or chips. Made from sour cream, buttermilk, mayonnaise, garlic, herbs, and a touch of lemon juice and Tabasco, it offers a fresh and tangy flavor that's easy to whip up and keeps well refrigerated.

Ingredients

For the Dressing

  • ½ cup sour cream
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise (best quality such as Hellmann's or Duke's)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • 1½ teaspoons dried dill
  • ¼ cup finely chopped fresh chives
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
  • Few dashes Tabasco sauce (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Ingredients: Mince the garlic cloves finely and chop the fresh chives. Measure out all other ingredients to have them ready for mixing.
  2. Combine Ingredients: In a medium bowl, add the sour cream, buttermilk, mayonnaise, minced garlic, salt, pepper, dried dill, chopped chives, lemon juice, and optional Tabasco sauce.
  3. Whisk Together: Whisk all the ingredients thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and well combined, ensuring even distribution of herbs and seasoning for consistent flavor.
  4. Taste and Adjust: Taste the dressing and adjust the seasoning as needed, adding more salt, pepper, or lemon juice to suit your preference.
  5. Chill: Cover the bowl and refrigerate the dressing until ready to serve. Chilling will allow the flavors to meld and the dressing to thicken slightly into a dip consistency.

Notes

  • The dressing keeps well in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
  • The garlic flavor intensifies the longer it sits, so reduce the garlic if making in advance.
  • Chilling thickens the dressing, making it perfect for dipping.
  • Use fresh herbs for best flavor, but dried dill works well if fresh is unavailable.
  • Opt for a high-quality mayonnaise for richer taste.
