Crispy nacho fries loaded with seasoned ground beef, melted cheddar cheese, and fresh toppings. Perfect for a flavorful and satisfying snack or appetizer, these fries combine crispy textures and bold Tex-Mex flavors with easy stovetop and broiler cooking techniques.

Ingredients

Fries

  • 1 pound frozen crinkle cut French fries

Beef and Seasoning

  • ½ pound ground beef
  • 1 small red onion, finely diced
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Cheese and Toppings

  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 1 jalapeño, sliced
  • Toppings (optional): iceberg lettuce, salsa, diced tomatoes, sour cream, etc.

Instructions

  1. Cook the Fries: Preheat your oven and cook the frozen crinkle cut French fries according to the package instructions. Add an extra 2-4 minutes to ensure they become extra crispy, which helps them hold up to the toppings without becoming soggy.
  2. Prepare the Ground Beef: While the fries bake, heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook it, crumbling with a spatula, until no longer pink. This usually takes about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Add Onion and Seasonings: Add the finely diced red onion to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes until slightly softened. Then, stir in chili powder, garlic powder, cumin, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to evenly distribute the spices. Drain any excess grease from the pan as needed.
  4. Assemble the Nacho Fries: Once fries are crispy, spread them out evenly on a large baking sheet or cutting board. Spoon the seasoned ground beef evenly over the fries, then sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top.
  5. Melt the Cheese: Place the assembled fries under the broiler on high heat for 1-2 minutes. Watch carefully to avoid burning; the goal is to melt the cheese quickly without overcooking or drying out the fries.
  6. Add Final Toppings: Remove from the oven and immediately top with sliced green onions, jalapeños, and any other desired toppings such as iceberg lettuce, salsa, diced tomatoes, and sour cream. Serve hot for best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • For extra crispy fries, avoid overcrowding the baking sheet during cooking.
  • Broil the cheese just until melted to prevent fries from drying out.
  • Feel free to customize toppings to your preference—add guacamole or black olives for variety.
  • Use a slotted spoon when serving to drain excess grease from beef topping.
  • This recipe works well as an appetizer or a casual meal for game day or parties.
