This Philly Cheesesteak Casserole is a comforting and easy-to-make dish that captures the flavors of a classic Philly cheesesteak sandwich in a baked casserole form. Ground beef is sautéed with bell peppers, onions, and garlic, layered with provolone cheese, and bound together with an egg and cream custard. Baked until golden and bubbly, it’s perfect for a family dinner or casual gathering.

Ingredients

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 ½ lb. Ground beef
  • 2 Bell peppers, chopped
  • ½ Onion, chopped
  • 2 tsp. Minced garlic

Seasonings and Cheese

  • 1 tsp. Seasoned salt
  • 8 Slices provolone cheese
  • 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

Custard Binder

  • 4 Large eggs
  • ¼ Cup heavy whipping cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Generously grease a 9x9 inch baking dish to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
  2. Brown the Beef: Place a large skillet over medium-high heat on the stove and add the ground beef. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the meat is partially browned and starting to brown but not fully cooked yet.
  3. Sauté the Vegetables: Add the chopped onions and bell peppers to the skillet with the partially browned beef. Continue cooking until the ground beef is completely browned and the vegetables have softened slightly.
  4. Season and Drain: Stir in the seasoned salt and minced garlic, cooking for another 30 seconds until the garlic is fragrant. Then carefully drain off any excess grease from the skillet to keep the casserole from being too greasy.
  5. Layer the Meat: Transfer the beef and vegetable mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading it into an even layer across the bottom.
  6. Add the Cheese: Lay the 8 slices of provolone cheese evenly over the beef and vegetable layer, covering it completely.
  7. Make the Custard Binder: In a small bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy whipping cream, and Worcestershire sauce until fully combined.
  8. Bake: Pour the egg and cream mixture evenly over the cheese layer in the baking dish. Place in the preheated oven and bake for 35-40 minutes until the casserole is cooked through, and the top is golden and bubbling.

Notes

  • Use a 9x9 inch baking dish for the best thickness and even cooking.
  • Ensure to drain excess grease from the beef mixture to prevent a greasy casserole.
  • You can substitute provolone with mozzarella or cheddar for different flavor profiles.
  • Leftovers can be stored covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
  • For a low-carb option, this casserole works well as is, without any additional sides like bread or rice.
