These Pizza Burgers combine the savory flavors of ground beef with classic pizza toppings like pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, and mushrooms. Ready in just 30 minutes, they're a perfect easy weeknight meal that kids and adults will love, featuring juicy beef and melty cheese served on toasted hamburger buns.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1-1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1 can (15 ounces) pizza sauce
  • 1 can (4 ounces) mushroom stems and pieces, drained
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 6 hamburger buns, split and toasted
  • 1-1/2 cups shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Cook the beef mixture: In a large cast-iron or other heavy skillet, cook the ground beef and chopped onion over medium heat until the meat is no longer pink, about 3 to 5 minutes, breaking the beef into crumbles as it cooks. Drain any excess grease from the pan.
  2. Combine the sauce and seasonings: Stir in the pizza sauce, drained mushroom stems and pieces, sugar, and dried oregano into the cooked beef mixture. Mix well to combine all ingredients evenly.
  3. Assemble the pizza burgers: Spoon the beef mixture generously onto the toasted hamburger buns, dividing it evenly. Then sprinkle shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese over the beef on each bun.
  4. Broil the burgers: Place the assembled pizza burgers on an ungreased baking sheet and position them about 4 inches from the broiler heat. Broil until the mozzarella cheese melts and bubbles, about 2 minutes. Keep a close eye to prevent burning.

Notes

  • Use part-skim mozzarella to reduce fat while keeping good melt and flavor.
  • For a spicier kick, add crushed red pepper flakes to the beef mixture.
  • Drain excess grease carefully to avoid greasy burgers.
  • Watch broiling time closely to avoid burning the cheese.
  • Serve with a side salad or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
  • Can substitute hamburger buns with sandwich rolls or hoagie buns if preferred.
