Pirikara Konnyaku is a quick and flavorful Japanese dish featuring thinly sliced konnyaku pan-fried with chili flakes, glazed with a savory sake-soy sauce mixture, and finished with toasted sesame seeds. This spicy and chewy treat makes a perfect low-calorie snack or side dish.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 220 grams konnyaku
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  • Chili flakes (to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon sake
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Slice konnyaku: Cut 220 grams of konnyaku into thin slices to ensure even cooking and absorption of flavors.
  2. Heat chili flakes: Place a frying pan over medium-high heat, add 1 teaspoon vegetable oil, and sprinkle in chili flakes to infuse the oil with spice as they sizzle briefly.
  3. Brown konnyaku first side: Spread the sliced konnyaku in a single layer in the pan without disturbing them. Allow them to pan-fry undisturbed until they achieve a nice browned crust on one side.
  4. Brown konnyaku second side: Flip the konnyaku slices carefully and continue to fry until the second side is browned evenly, enhancing texture and flavor.
  5. Glaze konnyaku: Pour in 1 tablespoon each of sake and soy sauce along with 1 teaspoon sugar. Let the liquid reduce while coating the konnyaku slices evenly, ensuring the sauce thickens and clings well without any excess liquid remaining.
  6. Finish with sesame seeds: Sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds over the glazed konnyaku for added nuttiness and texture before serving.

Notes

  • Adjust the amount of chili flakes according to your preferred spice level.
  • Use a non-stick frying pan for best results and easier browning.
  • Konnyaku is a low-calorie, gelatinous ingredient made from konjac yam, popular in Japanese cuisine for its unique texture.
  • Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.
  • This dish pairs well with steamed rice or as a side to grilled meats and vegetables.
