Arabic Tea with Mint (Shai Bil Na’ana’a) is a soothing and refreshing Middle Eastern beverage made with loose-leaf black tea and fresh mint leaves. Traditionally served in clear teacups, this aromatic tea is lightly sweetened to taste and perfect for sharing with friends and family. Its vibrant amber-red color and refreshing minty aroma make it a comforting drink to savor any time of day.

Ingredients

Tea Base

  • 6 cups water
  • 2 teaspoons loose-leaf black tea (adjust to taste)

Flavoring

  • 6-8 fresh mint leaves (a large handful)

Optional

  • Sugar or sweetener, to taste

Instructions

  1. Boil the Water: Bring 6 cups of water to a rolling boil in a tea kettle or medium saucepan to prepare the base for the tea.
  2. Add Tea Leaves and Boil: Stir in 2 teaspoons of loose-leaf black tea into the boiling water and allow it to boil for 1 minute. This helps to fully release the tea’s flavor by agitating the leaves.
  3. Steep with Mint Leaves: Turn off the heat and immediately add 6-8 fresh mint leaves. Cover the pot and let the tea steep for 5 minutes. The tea should develop an amber-red color, indicating the perfect steeping time.
  4. Strain and Serve: Pour the tea through a small mesh strainer into clear teacups to remove the tea leaves and mint. Serve hot with sugar or sweetener on the side, allowing guests to adjust sweetness as desired.

Notes

  • You can adjust the quantity of tea leaves to make the tea stronger or milder based on your preference.
  • Fresh mint leaves add a vibrant flavor, but dried mint can be used in a pinch.
  • Serve with sugar or your favorite sweetener for a traditional experience, or enjoy unsweetened for a healthier option.
  • The steeping time is critical; over-steeping can make the tea bitter, so aim for about 5 minutes.
  • This tea is best enjoyed fresh and hot but can be served at room temperature.
