Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 to 4 whole sweet potatoes
  • Optional: butter (for serving)
  • Optional: sea salt (for seasoning)
  • Optional: black pepper (for seasoning)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place a wire rack on top. Lightly spray the rack with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare the Sweet Potatoes: Rinse the sweet potatoes thoroughly under cold running water to remove dirt. Use a brush if needed. Inspect for any blemishes or soft spots and remove them with a paring knife. Dry the potatoes completely by patting them with a paper towel.
  3. Poke Holes in Potatoes: Place each sweet potato on the wire rack. Using a fork, poke 4–6 holes evenly spaced around each potato. This allows steam to escape during baking and prevents bursting.
  4. Bake the Potatoes: Place the baking sheet with the rack and sweet potatoes into the preheated oven. Bake for approximately 45 minutes or until a knife or skewer inserted into the thickest part of the potato slides in easily, indicating they are tender all the way through.
  5. Serve: Remove the potatoes from the oven and let them cool slightly. Split open and optionally top with butter, sea salt, and black pepper to taste, or use them as a base for your favorite toppings and dishes.

Notes

  • Cooking time may vary depending on the size of the sweet potatoes; larger ones may take up to 60 minutes.
  • For a crispier skin, omit the wire rack and place potatoes directly on the parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Sweet potatoes can be baked ahead and stored refrigerated for up to 5 days for meal prep convenience.
  • Use a fork or skewer to check doneness; it should insert easily without resistance.
  • If you prefer, wrap the potatoes individually in foil before baking to retain moisture, though this may result in softer skins.
